My parents never told me I was special and I’m grateful. They constantly reminded me that I’m not privileged, nor do I have any special “rights” or am I entitled to anything I didn’t earn. In fact the only thing that makes me different from many others is I internalized those important facts of life.

Being the eldest of the children, I had more than my fair share of chores.
Special? Only in that I got to babysit my brothers and sisters, wash dishes, pull weeds, etc, etc.
